Pitfalls to Avoid in Unit Conversion

Unit conversion looks like arithmetic until recipes, travel, product specs, health logs, and engineering notes collide. The same digits mean different things in different systems. Before clicking convert, say aloud what you are turning into what.
Length mixes of inches, centimeters, feet, and meters fail when decimal places and tolerances are ignored. “About 30 cm” and “300 mm” can be treated differently on a drawing. Keep the source unit and add the converted value beside it on spec sheets.
Mass and weight confusions among pounds, kilograms, and ounces show up in shipping and fitness tracking. Liquids add another trap: milliliters and fluid ounces are volume, not grams, unless you assume a density. Do not silently equate ml and g.
Temperature is not a pure scale multiply. Celsius and Fahrenheit include an offset, so “twice as hot” intuition fails. After converting cooking or weather values, ask whether the result is physically plausible.
Digital storage mixes SI (1000) and IEC (1024) conventions. GB versus GiB, and advertised disk size versus usable space, explain many “missing gigabytes” complaints. Check which definition a host or carrier uses for quotas.
Mixing currencies, percentages, and physical units in one table invites misreads. A 30% discount is not 30 percentage points, and price-per-kilogram is not price-per-item. Freeze units in column headers and add a separate converted column instead of overwriting source data.
